What Home Charging Handles Best, And Where Public Charging Steps In

Recent conversations around home charging losses and charging-related fire safety show why CPOs should position public charging as a professional, controlled, and confidence-building infrastructure experience.

For most drivers, home charging is still the default ideal. It fits into overnight routines, and in most markets it's perceived as the cheapest way to charge. That perception isn't wrong, exactly. But it's incomplete. Recent testing on charging efficiency, and a residential fire in Malaysia now under investigation, point to the same underlying issue: the quality and monitoring of the hardware behind the plug, not the electricity itself. Neither is a story about home charging being unsafe or expensive in some abstract sense. Both are stories about what happens when charging infrastructure isn't purpose-built, inspected, and monitored the way public charging is.

This isn't an argument against home charging. It will remain central to EV ownership. The opportunity for CPOs is showing exactly where a professionally operated charging experience solves problems a home outlet structurally can't.

The Hidden Cost of Home Charging

German motoring club ADAC recently tested charging losses across five EV models on three home setups: a basic household power point, a dedicated wallbox, and a low-power setup simulating solar charging. The pattern held across every vehicle tested; a standard power point lost meaningfully more energy than a proper wallbox.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA showed the widest gap: losses of 24.2% on a basic household socket, dropping to roughly 6–7% on an 11kW wallbox. ADAC attributed the gap to the car's onboard charger throttling itself on a standard outlet. Every other vehicle in the test followed the same direction; meaningfully worse losses at the power point, roughly half that (or better) on a dedicated wallbox.

Because home meters measure what leaves the outlet, not what actually reaches the battery, the driver still pays for the full metered amount either way — the loss simply disappears between the wall and the pack. That's not a home-charging failure. It's a hardware and setup problem, and it's exactly the kind of variable that disappears once charging moves to infrastructure built and maintained for the job.

Safety Is Becoming Part of the Charging Value Proposition

On August 16, a two-storey terrace house in Alam Damai, Cheras, was destroyed in a fire that Kuala Lumpur's Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) says is believed to have started from an EV charging at the front of the house; the cause is still under investigation. In response, Malaysia's fire department confirmed it's now considering formal safety guidelines for home EV charging installations.

This is one incident, not a trend line. JBPM has logged around 25 EV-related fires over the past three years, a number it describes as relatively stable rather than sharply rising. But it's a preview of where regulatory and public attention is heading: toward the wiring, hardware, and installation quality behind every charging session, home or public.

That's exactly the terrain where professionally operated charging has a structural edge; certified hardware, proper electrical protection, routine inspection, and monitoring that a private garage installation typically doesn't have.

What This Means for CPOs

A few strategic takeaways follow from both threads:

  • Price per kWh isn't the whole value proposition. A cheap tariff means less if the session is inefficient or the hardware is inconsistent.

  • Hardware quality is a visible differentiator, not a spec sheet detail. The gap between a household socket and a dedicated wallbox in the ADAC data is the same gap between unmanaged and professionally deployed infrastructure.

  • Safety confidence is becoming competitive, not just compliance. As fire departments, insurers, and property owners pay closer attention, well-maintained public infrastructure carries more weight than it used to.

  • Public charging is a layer, not a replacement. It belongs in the conversation for fleets, multifamily housing, workplaces, and travel corridors alongside home charging, not against it.

  • Reliability and installation quality are commercial arguments, not just technical ones. Uptime and durability are what turn a charging session into a repeat customer.

Where Hardware Does the Work

None of this holds up without infrastructure built for repeated, unattended public use. A public charger engineered for durability and thermal performance doesn't carry the same throttling or heat-derating risk that shows up in a home setup pushed past its limits. Fault prediction and remote diagnostics catch a degrading connector before it becomes a stalled session or a safety event, and network-level visibility means uptime and load are being watched at the site level, not hoped for at the outlet level.

Public charging should be positioned as the charging experience which drivers trust for its reliability, safety, and certainty, and the moments a home outlet was never built to handle.
