Airports harbour masses of people, airplanes, and, importantly, land vehicles. For travelers and residents to transport from the airport to residential areas, they need transportation services, which have historically been predominantly diesel-powered. This changes. California, as a state with major air travel hubs, is powering these vehicles flowing in and out of one of the busiest and largest airports, SFO, to be electric.
What’s the Plan?
California has announced the development of a fast EV charging facility at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), which will:
Strategically accommodate the demand for EVs in a high-traffic environment
Drive the growth of electric rideshare drivers (i.e., primarily Uber and Lyft)
Increase charging accessibility to the general public, especially EV-driving airport customers.
The electric hub project at SFO shows California’s commitment as the state carries through its Clean Miles Standard, which mandates that 90% of all Uber and Lyft miles are from EVs by 2030.
SFO receives over 50 million enplaned and deplaned passengers annually. Naturally, the environmental impact of this project is significant. With an e-fleet transition comes fewer carbon emissions. Estimates indicate that this single EV hub at SFO prevents over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions within its first decade of operation.
Leading the EV Charger Deployment
California’s leadership in mandates extends to its explorations in recent innovations. The state actively explored and implemented smart charging programs. Results from a pilot program funded by the California Energy Commission show that EV charging based on dynamic price signals can achieve up to 98% charging load. Significantly higher than the 60-70% typically delivered by traditional time-of-use rates, the smart charging efficiency will cost-effectively and consistently manage the high demands of busy sites, such as the SFO charging hub.
The deployment at SFO is a testament to how flexible EV charging solutions can successfully meet the high demands of busy areas. Initiatives like these, accommodating numerous vehicles regularly, are necessary to advance electric mobility.
